An elegant Mucha model, holding an artist's brush, looks across the page at the description of the artworks enclosed. A delightful example of Mucha's superb Art Nouveau artistry. Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series, L'Estampe Moderne was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios, with four original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for this series. Some of the contributing artists included Mucha, Rhead, Meunier, Ibels, Steinlen, Willette and Grasset.
In the context of Mucha's oeuvre, this artistic and literary work combines in a fortuitously unique way his philosophy, imagination, talent and skill, reflects his past achievements in decorative design, and is also a precursor of his future artistic developments. (Rennert/Weill )
