Derriere Le Miroir (Behind the Mirror) issue no 147 was published in June 1964 for the exhibition of 38 inks, drawings, watercolors and washes by CHAGALL at the Galerie Maeght. Devoted exclusively to contemporary graphic work of artists represented by the gallery, the periodical Derriere le Miroir served as both, exhibition catalogue for Maeght shows as well as forum for distribution of less expensive original graphic works.

Derrière le Miroir (Behind the Mirror) was an art journal published between 1946 and 1982 (253 issues) by the French publisher and gallery owner Aimé Maeght. The Galerie Maeght, in Paris since 1945, exhibited and promoted names, such as Bonnard, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Steinberg, Chagall, Bram Van Velde, Miró, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Ubac, Bazaine, Calder, Derain, Chillida, Tapiés, among so many other artists.

The publication was the outcome of the gallery owner's passion for publishing, and rapidly became the catalogue for the exhibitions held at the Gallery. The magazine, itself designed as an art object sumptuously presented in a large (38 x 28 cm) format, is illustrated with original lithographs as well as a number of reproductions. Poets and writers like Aragon, Beckett, Char, Eluard, Prévert, Queneau, Reverdy, Sartre, contributed with unpublished texts.
