Rene Péan contributed several designs to the Aux Trois Quartiers, a superb luxury departmentstore which was located on the Boulevard de la Madeleine in Paris. Here the store's Oriental Carpets (Tapis d'Orient) are advertised in dazzling colours and to great effect. Aux Trois Quartiers, Paris 1899
"Pean's paean to rugs, for a Paris department store. An Arab or Persian merchant sits amid his colourful wares, the caravan and mosque in the background lend further authenticity. Red and blue dominate this multi-coloured design" (Rennert PAI-XIX, 457)
"Rene Pean was a pupil of Cheret, working under him at the Chaix printing firm and this piece definitely reflects the master's influence. He specialized in theatre and cabaret posters from around 1890 to 1905. After being among the first to produce posters for the fledgling movie industry, he faded into obscurity" (Rennert, PAI-XXX, 92)
