The "Nouveau Salon des Cent" portfolio consists of a hundred posters created by one hundred of the best graphic designers of our time, from 24 different countries including China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Zimbabwe, the United-States and most of the European countries, as a tribute to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, for the Centenary of his death, 1901-2001. Initiated by the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum Partners' Club. In cooperation with the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum of Albi. The printing was limited to only 380. The posters have been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world.
The Designer - Ruud van Empel
Ruud van Empel (1958)
1976-1981 Studies at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts in Breda, graphic design department. He is awarded the St Joost Prize for his final exam.
1981-1985 He works as a graphic designer at Studio Dumbar in The Hague and Hard Werken in Rotterdam; he then works for six months under the direction of Ikko Tanaka in Tokyo. From 1984 he works free-lance and designs stamps, posters and theatre sets.
1986-1995 In this period he starts making art and videotapes.
He also works as designer for television and film productions. Some productions are: Theo en Thea en de ontmaskering van het Tenenkaasimperium, Petit Populair, Kreatief met kurk, and 30 minuten.
He is awarded the Charlotte Kohler prize in 1993.
1996-1997 A grant from the Dutch Fine Arts, Design and Architecture Fund allows him to further develop his talent as a visual artist.
By the end of 1996 he issues his first series of photographs and publishes his first catalogue.
1998-1999 He exhibits his photoworks at Torch Gallery/Amsterdam, at the kunstrai/Art Amsterdam and Art Cologne in Cologne, he has his first solo exhibition at the Groninger Museum with posterdesiqns and photoworks.
2000-2001 He is working on several TV shows making leaders and bumpers, designing posters for Film and Theatre productions, and works on his photoworks which he exhibits in Hamburg, Germany, Barcelona, and Madrid, Spain.
He is also designing a nightclub in Amsterdam called 'Panama'. He is awarded the H.N. Werkmanprize 2001 for his Photoworks, his poster design and his interior designs.
