L'Image monthly journal of literary and artistic figures decorated on wood.
L'Image was a monthly magazine published between December 1896 and December 1897 by the Wood Engravers Corporation of France. Of the twelve published issues, Mucha designed the first cover and subsequent covers were designed by De Feure, Verneuil, Victor Preuve, Paul Berthon, Marcel Lenoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and others. The magazine was formed as a concerted artistic effort to revitalize the art of wood engraving and as a protest against the encroaching processes of mechanized illustration. (Swann)
"Alphonse Maria Mucha is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin living in Paris, Mucha achieved immediate fame when, in December 1894, he accepted a commission to create a poster for one of the greatest actresses of this time, Sarah Bernhardt.
In the context of Mucha's oeuvre, this artistic and literary work combines in a fortuitously unique way his philosophy, imagination, talent and skill, reflects his past achievements in decorative design, and is also a precursor of his future artistic developments. (Rennert/Weill )
