The Portfolio

The "Nouveau Salon des Cent" portfolio consists of a hundred posters created by one hundred of the best graphic designers of our time, from 24 different countries including China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Zimbabwe, the United-States and most of the European countries, as a tribute to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, for the Centenary of his death, 1901-2001. Initiated by the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum Partners' Club. In cooperation with the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum of Albi. The printing was limited to only 380. The posters have been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world.

The Designer - Ivan Chermayeff

Work as a designer, painter and illustrator has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, the Soviet Union and Japan. A member of the Industrial Designers Society of America and the Alliance Graphique Internationale. Mr. Chermayeff is a Benjamin Franklin Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has served as Andrew Carnegie Visiting Professor of Art at Cooper Union, and as Visiting Professor at the Kansas City Art Institute. In 1973 he was co-chairman of the First Federal Design Assembly sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. He is the author of Observations on American Architecture (Viking Press, 1972) and Ellis Island (MacMillen, 1987).

Mr. Chermayeff's work has received numerous awards from the Type Directors Club, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Society of Illustrators, and the Art Directors Club of New York. In 1967 the American Institute of Architects honoured him with its Industrial Art Medal, and in 1971 the Philadelphia College of Art awarded him the Gold Medal. In 1974 the Fifth Avenue Association gave him a special award for his contributions to the visual environment of New York City. In 1979 Ivan Chermayeff and Thomas Geismar received the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

In 1981 Mr. Chermayeff received the President's Fellow Award from the Rhode Island School of Design and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the Portland School of Art. Mr. Chermayeff was named to the New York Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1982. In 1985 Ivan Chermayeff and Thomas Geismar both received the Yale Arts Award Medal. In 1991, Mr. Chermayeff received a Doctorate in Fine Arts (Honorary) from both the Corcoran Museum of Art (Washington, D.CJ and The University of the Arts (Philadelphia). Mr. Chermayeff has received the title Royal Designer for Industry of the Royal Society of Arts and Commerce (RDI Hon) in recognition of his achievements in graphic design.

Mr. Chermayeff is a past president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and former vice president of the Yale Arts Association. He was a member of both the Yale Committee on Art and Architecture and the Harvard University Board of Overseers Committee on Visual and Environmental Studies. In addition, he was a trustee for the Museum of Modern Art in New York for 20 years and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Design Conference in Aspen since 1967. In 1990, Ivan and Jane Clark Chermayeff co-chaired the 40th International Design Conference in Aspen on the subject of children. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of New School University and the Board of Governors of Parsons School of Design, and has been a National Trustee of the Smithsonian Institution. He is a past president and past vice president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

Ivan Chermayeff studied at Harvard University, the Institute of Design (IIT) in Chicago, and graduated from Yale university, School of Art and Architecture.
