"Carqueville's large body of posters for Philadelphia-based Lippincott's magazine was completed before he left his native Chicago, where he had a long productive career as a lithographer, designer and painter. Penfield was, no doubt, his main influence. That inspiration is clearly in place in this design for the December 1894 issue, with a solitary stroller making his way through a wintery expanse with a copy of Lippincott's securely tucked into his coat pocket, ready for perusal upon arriving at cozier climes. (Rennert, PAI-XXVIII, 194)
